CAMP PENDLETON, CA (June 17, 2024) A chaotic collision occurred on Saturday, and it turned deadly. A young marine driving an SUV lost control of the vehicle while travelling northbound on Interstate 5.
According to reports, the 20-year-old Cristian Banuelos of Mount Vernon, Washington, was driving just south of Las Pulgas Road in unincorporated San Diego County. At around 5:45 a.m., the man’s BMW 440I suddenly veered to the left, crashing into the center median guard rail. It then veered to the right, turned over, and collided with a call box and a barbed-wire fence. It is currently unclear what initially caused the driver to veer over to the left.

To make matters even worse, there were two passengers in the car, also marines. One passenger was a 19-year-old woman. She sustained minor injuries in the accident and declined medical attention at the scene. The other was a 21-year-old man, who unfortunately suffered major injuries. He was taken to a trauma center for treatment.
Devastatingly, the driver of the car, Banuelos, passed away. Life-saving measures were performed when police and emergency medical services arrived at the scene, but the driver succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into this accident is ongoing. California Highway Patrol encourages anyone who witnessed the crash to call them.
