(San Diego, CA) An 86-year-old bicyclist was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries Monday afternoon, October 13, following a Main Street collision in the Egger Highlands neighborhood, according to the San Diego Police Department.
The crash occurred around 3:49 p.m. in the 2500 block of Main Street. Police said the elderly cyclist rode northbound on Alamitos Avenue when he crossed the eastbound lanes of Main Street. As he entered the westbound lane, a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 39-year-old man struck him.
When paramedics arrived, they found victim with multiple serious injuries. They determined he had a blood clot in his brain and several fractures. Paramedics immediately rushed him to a local hospital. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. SDPD’s Traffic Division is handling the investigation.
Perspective on the Main Street Collision
Crashes involving older bicyclists often raise concerns about visibility, right-of-way, and the ability of both drivers and riders to anticipate each other’s movements. This incident will likely prompt investigators to review whether speed, roadway design, or cyclist positioning contributed to the crash.
Because the collision involved a vehicle striking a bicyclist, California Vehicle Code 21200 is relevant. This statute gives cyclists the same rights and responsibilities as motorists. This means cyclists must follow traffic signals and yield appropriately. It also reminds drivers to share the road and remain alert for bicycles entering or crossing traffic lanes.
If driver speed contributed to the crash, the Basic Speed Law may also apply. It requires motorists to maintain a speed that is safe for the conditions. This includes visibility, pedestrian or cyclist presence, and time of day. Even within the posted limit, drivers must adjust their speed when approaching intersections or areas where bikes are present.
Police will use these statutes, along with physical evidence and witness accounts, to determine the cause of the Main Street collision.
