Colfax, CA (June 27, 2024) A collision in Placer County on Thursday morning, June 27th, left a bicyclist with fatal injuries in Colfax. Officers reported that the accident occurred just before 2:00 a.m. on Highway 174, near the Red Frog Bar.
It was dark in Colfax as a pickup truck headed along Highway 174. At the same time, a bicyclist was riding along the highway and, for reasons that are still unknown, was in the middle of the roadway. The pickup’s headlights did not show the bicyclist until it was too late to react. The pickup struck the bicycle, throwing the rider. The driver of the pickup immediately stopped and called 911, officers reported.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene and, using lights, found the bicycle on the ground in a bent and destroyed heap. The rider, was on the ground several feet from the bicycle with serious injuries. Paramedics arrived at the scene and began life-saving treatment on the victim as they loaded them into an ambulance. They continued life-saving measures as they rushed the bicyclist to a local hospital for treatment. Medical personnel did everything they could, but the rider succumbed to their injuries. With heavy hearts, officials pronounced them dead at the hospital.
Detectives at the scene do not suspect the pickup driver of driving while under the influence at the time of the accident. The driver cooperated with authorities during the investigation. Officers are working to understand why the bicyclist was in the middle of the highway and what exactly transpired on that dark, early morning in Colfax.
