(Glendale, AZ) A bicyclist was killed late Friday night, November 7, in a 59th Avenue crash after being struck by a vehicle just south of Glendale Avenue, authorities said.

According to the Glendale Police Department, officers and paramedics responded around 11:00 p.m. to the area of 59th Avenue and McLellan Road following reports of a collision involving a pedestrian. When officers arrived, they determined that a bicyclist had been struck and was already deceased.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said. It is not yet known whether impairment played a role in the crash, and detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. The bicyclist’s identity has not been released pending notification of family members.

Overview on the 59th Avenue Crash

In Arizona, when a vehicle strikes a bicyclist, investigators often reference the Bicycle Safety Statute. It requires drivers to maintain a safe distance of at least three feet when overtaking or passing a cyclist. Investigators will examine whether the driver failed to provide adequate space or awareness while traveling on 59th Avenue.

If speed was a factor, the Reasonable and Prudent Speed Law applies. This law requires motorists to operate at a speed safe for current traffic, road, and lighting conditions. Driving too fast at night can reduce reaction time and increase the risk of fatal outcomes for bicyclists.

Should distraction or inattention be suspected, the Distracted Driving Law may be considered. It prohibits the use of handheld devices while driving and is designed to prevent accidents caused by loss of focus. These statutes will guide Glendale Police investigators in determining the causes and accountability in the 59th Avenue crash.

    Support for the Family

You should stay in contact with the Glendale Police Department for updates on the investigation and the official release of the victim’s name. Requesting the crash report will provide key details once the case is complete.

When ready, consider reaching out to an attorney who specializes in wrongful-death and bicycle-injury cases in Arizona. They can help explain your family’s rights and assist with any potential civil actions.

Above all, take care of yourselves and seek support from loved ones and local community resources in Glendale. Grief counseling and victim-assistance services can provide comfort and help you navigate the emotional aftermath of this tragic loss.
