Long Beach, CA (June 27, 2024) Sadness covered the community of Signal Hill in Long Beach as news spread of a bicyclist’s death. The tragic accident took place at Skyline Drive and Cherry Avenue, claiming the life of 18-year-old Raider Magallanes. It happened just after 7:30 p.m. on June 18th, according to reports.

A steep hill on Skyline Drive has been the subject of concern for many motorists. Their concern was justified when a recent Poly High School graduate, 18-year-old Raider Magallanes, was struck and killed while riding a bike. Magallanes was riding a bicycle with two friends as they approached Cherry Avenue. An SUV was driving towards the intersection and drove through at the same time as the bicyclists. The SUV struck Magallanes in the intersection, throwing the teenager several feet.

Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and found Magallanes on the ground, motionless. They rushed to his side and began life-saving measures as his friends watched, helplessly. Sadly, the teenager succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The scene grew quiet as officers covered the young man with a tarp and called for a coroner. The driver of the SUV stopped and cooperated with officers during their investigation.

Officers believe that the bikers had a red light when they headed through the intersection. However, the teenager’s aunt disagrees and has argued this case. Velina Velasquez stated that she believes her nephew and his friends had a green light at the time of the collision. Needless to say, this investigation is ongoing as officers determine what really happened that evening in Long Beach.

A GoFundMe account has been set up by family members to help cover funeral costs. You can find the donation page at My Son Was Taken Too Soon.
