Van Nuys, CA (November 14, 2024) On Nov. 8, a terrible accident caused by street racing critically injured two young men named Rangel Vega and Alejandro Luquin, both 22.
According to police, a Mercedes-Benz GT63 and a Rolls-Royce Cullinan were speeding westbound on Sherman Way around 9:50 p.m. Vega and Luquin were driving in a Honda Civic going eastbound, and they attempted a left turn into a parking lot at Sherman Circle.
As they did so, the speeding Mercedes struck the right side of the Honda. The Rolls Royce swerved left in an attempt to avoid the collision, entering oncoming lanes and striking a Chevrolet, then a curb. The driver of the Rolls Royce exited their vehicle and fled on foot. At this time, no reports indicate that the motorist has been found.
The Mercedes driver was taken to a hospital, and was later arrested on suspicion of reckless driving.
Vega and Luquin were rushed to the hospital with critical injuries. Tragically, Vega passed away on Saturday, Nov. 9. Luquin’s sister, Mayra, told ABC7 that her brother has two broken legs, a broken arm, and a broken jaw as he fights for his recovery.
“He’s still in a lot of pain,” she said. “His recovery is going to be long and hard for him.”
The families of the two 22-year-olds have established a GoFundMe to assist with medical and funeral expenses.
