Fresno, CA (August 20, 2024) The community of Fresno was left in shock as news spread of a two-vehicle, hit-and-run crash that claimed a woman’s life. The accident took place at the intersection of University Avenue and Chestnut Avenue at approximately 12:20 a.m. One of the vehicles fled the scene following the accident, according to the Fresno Police Department.
It was just after midnight as vehicles drove through the dark in Fresno. Among the vehicles were an SUV and a white truck. Initial reports indicated that the SUV was attempting to turn north onto Chestnut Avenue as the pickup was driving north on Chestnut. The two vehicles collided in the intersection at approximately 12:20 a.m. The driver of the SUV, identified only as a woman, was thrown from the vehicle, officers reported. The driver of the pickup got out of the vehicle and took off on foot, fleeing the scene.

Authorities arrived at the scene and found the two vehicles in the middle of the intersection, damaged. The pickup was empty, according to reports. Officers found the driver of the SUV with fatal injuries. Sadly, shew as pronounced dead at the scene. Officers covered her with a tarp and waited for the coroner to arrive. A passenger in the SUV was found with injuries and transported to a nearby hospital to receive treatment.
Officers began looking for the driver of the white pickup that had obviously fled the scene. Lt. Leslie Williams with the Fresno Police Department reported that they found the driver fairly quickly and placed the suspect under arrest. Officers investigated the scene and are working to determine if speed of drugs and alcohol played a role in this fatal Fresno collision.
