Costa Mesa, CA (August 19, 2024) The community of Costa Mesa was left in shock as news spread of a horrible accident on the 55 Freeway on Monday morning. The collision occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. as the tow truck driver was outside of the vehicle. The traumatic accident caused the loss of the driver’s left leg, according to reports. The collision occurred south of the 405 Freeway, according to reports and caused other injuries, as well.

It was 2:30 in the morning on Monday, August 19th, as a tow truck driver stepped out of his vehicle on the side of the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway in Costa Mesa. It is unknown if the driver was loading a vehicle or adjusting things. As he stood outside of the tow truck, a black two-door sedan suddenly hit the tow truck at a high speed. Reports indicated that it then slammed into the northbound right shoulder wall of the freeway before coming to a stop.

Paramedics quickly loaded him into an ambulance and rushed him to a nearby hospital to receive treatment. They also found a passenger who had suffered an injury to their arm, according to reports. They were also taken to a hospital for treatment.

Officers issued a SigAlert just after 3:00 a.m. as they blocked the northbound 55 Freeway, as well as the Paularino Avenue on-ramp, according to reports. They gathered evidence at the scene and took statements. They are working to determine exactly what happened on that stretch of Freeway in Costa Mesa in the early hours of morning. Crews worked to clean the scene, as well, so traffic could resume on the freeway.
