Shasta County, CA (June 7, 2024) The community of Shasta County was saddened following news of a pedestrian death on Monday, June 3rd. An 88-year-old woman was struck by a Cadillac while attempting to cross Shasta Dam Boulevard at approximately 1:15 p.m.
It was a Monday afternoon in Shasta County as an 88-year-old woman walked along Shasta Dam Boulevard. Suddenly, the Shasta Lake resident began crossing the street outside of a designated crosswalk. As she crossed, a Cadillac sedan, driven by 57-year-old Pamela Verhanes, was heading west when she hit the pedestrian. The force knocked the elderly pedestrian to the ground, officers reported. The driver of the Cadillac stopped and waited for officers to arrive.
The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene and found the pedestrian on the ground with life-threatening injuries. Paramedics rushed to her side and began performing life-saving measures on the woman as they loaded her into an ambulance. She was rushed to a local hospital to receive emergency medical care. She hung on for two days before she finally succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday, June 7th, officers reported. The victim was, sadly, pronounced dead at the hospital.
Officers reported that Verhanes had items hanging from her rear-view mirror that obstructed her view. However, officers do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in this fatal accident. Verhanes was cited for the object obstructing her view as well as for driving at an unsafe speed, according to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office.
