Winchester, CA (May 20, 2024) Shock rippled through the community of Winchester on Saturday night as news spread of two teenagers injured in an accident. A 17-year-old male from Murietta was driving a pickup with three teens in the truck bed, when he lost control and the pickup rolled. The three teens were thrown from the bed of the truck and two sustained life-threatening injuries. The accident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. on southbound Elliot Road, not far from Keller Road.

The 17-year-old was driving a 2008 Ford Ranger on Elliot Road, heading south. Reports indicated that he was only traveling at approximately 25 mph. Suddenly, the teen driver drifted to the right and onto the dirt shoulder of the road, where he lost control of the pickup. Officers said the truck spun out, fishtailed and then began to roll. The three teenagers in the truck bed, a 16-year-old girl, a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy were all thrown from the truck’s bed as it rolled.

The California Highway Patrol arrived at the scene and found the three teenagers on the dirt shoulder, two of whom looked to be in bad condition. Paramedics at the scene hurried to the teenagers and found two of them with life-threatening injuries. They quickly loaded them into ambulances and rushed them to Inland Valley Medical Center in serious condition. The third teen in the back of the pickup truck, the 16-year-old boy, sustained only minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

Officers with the California Highway Patrol do not believe that drugs or alcohol were factors in this collision. They are still investigating to try and determine exactly what happened, but also want to remind the public that riding in a pickup bed is not only dangerous, but it’s illegal.
