Rio Vista, CA (May 13, 2024) It was just after midnight when a horrible head-on collision claimed two people’s lives and injured a child and an infant. The fatal accident occurred just after midnight on Saturday, May 11th, on Highway 160 at Sherman Island Road. A 5-year-old child and a 3-month-old infant were both injured in this collision that killed two adults. The driver of the second vehicle was also hospitalized with serious injuries following the accident. Officers said they believe alcohol may have been a factor in this traumatic accident.

Initial reports indicated that a gray Nissan SUV was traveling south on Highway 160. A male was driving the vehicle and a female front passenger was in the front seat. The 5-year-old child and infant were in the back seat. A silver Lexus SUV was heading north on Highway 160 at the same time, officers reported. Suddenly, the Nissan SUV swerved into oncoming traffic and slammed, head-on, into the Lexus SUV.

Emergency personnel rushed to the scene and found both vehicles blocking the highway. Debris and glass covered the roadway and the vehicles were both badly damaged, according to reports. Officers checked the vehicles to see if anyone needed help. Sadly, the male driver and female passenger in the Nissan were both unresponsive. Officers said they had been killed in the collision and were both, sadly, pronounced dead at the scene. A 5-year-old child and a 3-month-old baby were in the back seat of the Nissan. They were both alive, officers said, but had both sustained injuries in the accident. Paramedics rushed the two children to a Bay Area hospital to receive treatment.

The driver of the Lexus SUV was also injured and taken to hospital in East Bay to receive treatment for serious injuries, officers said. The California Highway Patrol reported that the driver of the Lexus was the only occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Officers investigated the scene and believe that alcohol may have been a factor in this deadly head-on collision on Highway 160. The investigation is ongoing as they work to determine what exactly took place on this Sacramento highway.
