Santa Clarita, CA (May 13, 2024) The community of Santa Clarita awoke Sunday morning to news of a serious collision that claimed one person’s life and insured four. Unfortunately, 30-year-old Maritza Martinez did not survive the crash. This tragic collision took place on Saturday night, May 11th, at approximately 11:25 p.m. It all happened at the intersection of Sierra Highway and Sand Canyon Road, according to reports.

A black pickup truck was seen speeding down Sierra Highway late Saturday night, according to witnesses. As the pickup approached Sand Canyon Road, a white SUV was driving through the intersection. Without warning, and before either driver could react, the two vehicles collided in the intersection. Tires squealed and the sound of metal hitting metal echoed through the area as the two vehicles hit, throwing glass and debris in every direction.

The chaos and intense sounds from the accident died down and were quickly replaced by sirens. Emergency crews arrived at the scene within minutes and found the two vehicles in the middle of the intersections. Officers ran to the vehicles to help anyone in need and found four people with injuries. Sadly, they also found 30-year-old Maritza Martinez, unresponsive. With heavy hearts, they pronounced her dead at the scene and called the Medical Examiner’s office.

Paramedics with the Los Angeles County Fire Department were called and found four people with injuries, reports indicated. All four victims were loaded into ambulances and rushed to a local hospital to receive treatment. The extent or severity of their injuries has not been released.

The intersection was closed while investigators searched for evidence and gathered information to help them decipher what happened in this Santa Clarita intersection. Officers believe that speed was a factor in this fatal accident.
