San Diego, CA (May 4, 2024) Another life was carelessly claimed by a drunk driver on Thursday, May 2nd, in San Diego. 45-year-old Jairo Lazaro-Galicia, sadly, did not survive the collision. Shockingly, the drunk driver in this deadly accident was underage. The tragic collision took place at 50th Street and El Cajon Boulevard in the Colina Del Sol neighborhood of San Diego, officers reported. The pedestrian, Lazaro-Galicia, was fatally hit by the 20-year-old drunk driver just after 9:00 p.m.
Witnesses told police officers that Jairo Lazaro-Galicia was running on El Cajon Boulevard, heading south, and suddenly stopped to catch his breath. For reasons unknown, he stood in the No. 2 lane of the roadway, where he was hit by the 20-year-old driver, heading east. The force from the impact threw the pedestrian several feet before gravity pulled him down, hard, onto the road.
Several police cars from the San Diego Police Department, along with fire trucks from the SDFD were seen hurrying through the city streets. Their sirens wailed, emergency lights flashed and their horns honked as they headed through the darkened San Diego streets. They made their way to the scene and found Lazaro-Galicia on the ground with life-threatening injuries. Paramedics quickly transported him to Scripps Mercy Hospital with major head trauma. Not even 30 minutes after the collision occurred, Lazaro-Galicia was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene. Officers determined that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and also discovered that he wasn’t even old enough to legally drink. Officers arrested the 20-year-old driver at the scene and his vehicle was towed from the roadway.
Detectives with San Diego Police Department’s Traffic Division investigated the scene and are trying to piece together what exactly happened in the Colina Del Sol neighborhood that night. They are asking for anyone who witnessed this fatal collision to contact them at 858-495-7800.
