San Jose, CA (May 2, 2024) Sadness hung heavy in the air on Wednesday, May 1st, as news spread of a fatal accident in San Jose. The tragic collision claimed the life of a 38-year-old Palo Alto resident. It also left three young children, ages 2, 4 and 8, with injuries, reports indicated. This horrible scene played out on Highway 85, just south of Cottle Road.

A Toyota Sequoia was driving on State Highway 85, heading north, at a high rate of speed, according to reports. The 38-year-old driver was traveling at speeds higher than 65 miles per hour as they headed along Highway 85. With no warning, and for reasons still unknown, the Toyota suddenly drifted into the median, still traveling at a high rate of speed. Then, it slammed into the guardrail, smashing the entire front end of the Toyota.

The California Highway Patrol arrived at the scene and found the Toyota in the median, against the guardrail. The front-end was extremely damaged and debris littered the median. Officers approached the vehicle and found the driver unresponsive. Sadly, the driver had been killed in the collision and there was nothing they could do. They pronounced him dead at the scene and called the coroner. Three children, crying and scared, were passengers in the Toyota. The children, ages 2, 4 and 8 did sustain injuries in this crash, but thankfully, they were only minor injuries. The three children were taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

Investigators looked through the Toyota and around the scene and gathered evidence. They are determined to understand what caused the Toyota to veer off the roadway and crash into the median guardrail. They are asking witnesses to contact the California Highway Patrol at (408) 427-0700 with any information.
