Riverside, CA (April 28, 2024)  Chaos ensued on the 60 Freeway this morning when a wrong-way driver hit five vehicles, leaving one person in critical condition. It happened right around 2:15 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Eucalyptus Avenue in Riverside, according to reports.

It was the middle of the night in Riverside as vehicles traveled along Eucalyptus Avenue at a steady pace. Suddenly, a vehicle began heading east in the westbound lanes. One person on the freeway told officers that they saw headlights coming towards them. They moved to the right, hit their breaks and began honking their horn. The wrong-way vehicle struck five vehicles as it traveled the wrong way on the freeway.

The dark sky at 2:15 in the morning was lit up by emergency lights as police officers and firefighters hurried to the scene. Upon arrival, they found several damaged vehicles in the westbound lanes of the 60 Freeway. Firefighters found one person trapped inside one of the vehicles and had to use specialized tools to free the victim from the wreckage. The person was quickly loaded into an ambulance and rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, officers said.

Paramedics checked the other vehicles to give medical aid to anyone in need, but no other accidents have been reported at this time. Officers called for a two truck to remove at least one of the vehicles from the freeway and crews worked to clear the scene of glass and debris. Investigators spoke with this involved in the collision and are trying to determine what caused this wrong-way driver to end up traveling the wrong way on the 60 Freeway in Riverside.
