Bakersfield, CA (April 18, 2024) A two-vehicle collision on Wednesday morning, April 17th, left five people injured. It happened just before 5:30 a.m. on Copus Road, near Interstate 5.
As vehicles drove along Copus Road, a Chevrolet Silverado pickup, driven by a 52-year-old Bakersfield woman, ended up behind a slower vehicle, while heading west. The woman tried to pass the slower vehicle on the left, which was for oncoming traffic. As she moved into the oncoming lane to pass, a Toyota Camry was driving north on Copus Road. Neither driver had time to react and both vehicles collided, head-on, officers said.
The California Highway Patrol arrived at the scene along with paramedics and found the two vehicles with major front-end damage in the roadway. They hurried to check on the occupants of both vehicles, ready to give medical aid to anyone in need. They found the 52-year-old driver of the Chevy pickup with injuries and prepared her for an ambulance ride to a hospital. The driver of the Toyota, a 47-year-old Maricopa woman sustained significant injuries in the collision. There were three over occupants in the Toyota and they were all injured as well. Paramedics transported the five injured people to Kern Medical Center to receive treatment.
Officers at the scene reported that all five people were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. They also said they do not suspect drugs or alcohol to be factors in this Bakersfield crash. Tow trucks were called to the scene to remove the two damaged vehicles from the roadway and crews worked to clear the scene of glass and debris.
