Phelan, CA (April 15, 2024) Sadness swept through the town of Phelan on Sunday evening, as news spread of a head-on collision that killed the drivers of both vehicles. A child in one of the vehicles sustained critical injuries in the crash. It all happened around 8:15 p.m. on Phelan Road, east of Tumbleweed Road, according to reports. The California Highway Patrol reported that a 27-year-old Tommy Solis from Phelan and a 38-year-old woman from Oak Hills were both killed.
Reports indicated that a blue 2015 Subaru Forester, driven by Solis, was traveling west on Phelan Road. At the same time, a GMC Yukon, driven by the 38-year-old female, was heading east. Suddenly, the Yukon drifted over the left turn lane and into oncoming traffic. It ended up directly in the path of the Subaru, officers said. The man driving the Subaru had no time to react and the two vehicles collided, head-on.
The San Bernardino County Fire Department was the first to arrive at the scene. They found two badly damaged vehicles and the roadway was covered in debris and glass. They found Solis inside the Subaru. He had sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The female driver in the Yukon had sustained life-threatening injuries and was trapped inside the vehicle. Firefighters used specialized tools to free the woman from the wreckage. Firefighters called for a helicopter, which had to land in the middle of the roadway. The woman was loaded into the helicopter and flown to a hospital to receive emergency treatment. The medical staff in the emergency department at the hospital did everything they could. Unfortunately, the woman succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
A child, identified as a girl about 4-years-old, was a passenger in the SUV. She sustained critical injuries in the accident and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Officers had to call tow trucks to remove the two badly damaged vehicles from the roadway. It took crews hours to clear all of the pieces of debris and glass from the scene. Officers with the Victorville CHP Station worked to gather evidence and are actively investigating this accident in an attempt to understand what happened that night in Phelan.
