Needles, CA (April 10, 2024) A fatal collision on Interstate 40 in Needles claimed one person’s life on Wednesday morning, April 10th. The accident involved two semi-trucks and two sedans, according to police officers. One of the vehicles ended up down an embankment on the side of the interstate and another driver involved called 911 just after 4:15 a.m.
Early morning on Interstate 40 in Needles isn’t bumper to bumper but still has a decent amount of traffic. Drivers and officers were reminded of this on the morning of Wednesday, April 10th, when four vehicles collided on the interstate. Two semi-trucks, a black Ford Mustang and a Cadillac were all involved in this multi-vehicle accident.
The driver of the Mustang called 911 following the accident and told dispatchers that he was facing the wrong way on the freeway after being hit by a semi-truck. The California Highway Patrol hurried to the scene, their sirens and flashing lights breaking up the silence and calm of the early morning. They arrived at the scene, near Parks Road, and found one semi-truck blocking the freeway’s fast lane. The impact from the collision caused the Mustang to spin around and it was sitting in the middle of the freeway, facing the wrong direction.
A second semi-truck was carrying a load of pipes at the time of the collision. It had crashed into a ravine following the initial accident, according to reports. Officers with the CHP also found a Cadillac that had traveled down an embankment following the crash. It was estimated that the vehicle was 80 to 100 feet down the embankment.
Paramedics arrived at the scene and hurried to evaluate everyone in each vehicle. Sadly, one person did not survive this accident. They were pronounced dead at the scene and officers called for a coroner. It is unknown if anyone else was injured during this collision.
Detectives worked to determine what exactly happened on Interstate 40 and are also determined to figure out who was at fault. Tow trucks had to be called to the scene to remove damaged vehicles from the roadway, as well as pull the Cadillac from the ravine. Crews worked as quickly as they could to clear the roadway of debris and glass so traffic could resume.
