Davis, CA (March 15, 2024) Two California Highway Patrol officers were sitting in a patrol car on the side of Interstate 80 when a vehicle hit them, head-on. Investigators used dash cam surveillance and witness accounts to determine that the CHP vehicle was targeted and deliberately hit. The two officers were hospitalized with major injuries, following the collision, officials said.
It was Wednesday afternoon, March 13th, as two highway patrol officers sat in their patrol car on the side of eastbound Interstate 80, near Davis. Suddenly, a white SUV was seen driving the wrong-way on the shoulder of the highway, heading right for the patrol car. It continued approaching them at a high rate of speed until it hit the patrol vehicle, head-on.
Paramedics arrived at the scene and found that both officers had sustained minor to major injuries in the collision. They were both transported to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
CHP assistant commissioner, Ezery Beauchamp, said in a news release that it seems obvious that the officers “were targeted by the driver.” He said the officers had just completed a traffic stop and were getting ready to leave the side of the road, when they saw the white SUV speeding towards them. Beauchamp went on to say, “Acts of Violence like this against our officers will not be tolerated.”
The driver was arrested at the scene and booked into Yolo County Jail. The California Highway Patrol said they want to ensure this suspect is “held accountable for his actions.”
