Barstow, CA (February 16, 2024) A tragic accident on Valentine’s Day claimed one person’s life and injured two others in Barstow. A 65-year-old man from Buena Park lost his life in a two-vehicle rollover collision. The deadly accident occurred just after 12:45 p.m. on Interstate 15, authorities said.
A 2002 GMC Sierra was heading south on the freeway, just north of Afton Canyon Road, according to authorities. The 65-year-old man was driving and a 49-year-old female was riding in the front passenger seat. As they drove, a 2020 Chevrolet, driven by a 22-year-old man, was also heading south in front of the GMC. Initial reports indicated that the driver of the GMC attempted to pass the Chevrolet and drifted onto the median. The 65-year-old driver tried to get back into the lane and ended up slamming into the Chevrolet. The driver of the GMC lost control of his vehicle and began to roll, officers reported.
The GMC finally stopped in the northbound lanes of Interstate 15 and the driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle. The female passenger was wearing her seat belt and sustained minor injuries in the collision. She was taken by ambulance to Dignity Health-St. Rose Dominican Hospital, located in Henderson, Nevada, authorities said.
The California Highway Patrol arrived at the scene and found the damaged GMC, with the woman still inside. The Chevrolet was also damaged and the driver sustained injuries in the collision as well.
The driver of the GMC was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities.
