El Cajon, CA (January 31, 2024) – A harrowing wrong-way collision on Interstate 8 in El Cajon has left a community in shock as one man lost his life and a 17-month-old child sustained serious injuries on Sunday evening. The fatal incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. near Second Street, just west of El Cajon Valley High School.

According to reports from the California Highway Patrol, a driver was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of the freeway in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado. In a tragic turn of events, the driver made an unsafe maneuver to the right, causing the vehicle to exit the roadway and collide with a concrete guardrail.

The impact of the crash resulted in chunks of concrete debris being propelled towards several vehicles traveling on Second Street below the freeway. Tragically, one of these pieces struck a 17-month-old child who was seated in one of the affected vehicles.

Emergency medical services swiftly responded to the scene, rushing the injured toddler to Rady Children’s Hospital for urgent treatment. Heartbreakingly, the young child sustained major injuries.

Meanwhile, the Chevrolet Silverado erupted into flames following the collision, trapping the driver inside. Despite attempts by bystanders to rescue the individual from the engulfed vehicle, the driver ultimately succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of wrong-way driving and the devastating consequences it can have on innocent lives. As the community mourns the loss of one individual and prays for the recovery of the injured toddler, authorities emphasize the importance of road safety awareness and adherence to traffic laws to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
