Long Beach, CA (January 22, 2024) An SUV went off the road and crashed into a canal near the San Gabriel River, killing 2 men. The fatal accident was reported around 6:20 p.m. on Sunday, January 21st, on Studebaker Road, according to authorities.
Long Beach Fire Department Captain Jake Heflin reported that the collision occurred south of Loynes Drive. He said that the car crashed into about 10 feet of water and began to sink. Long Beach fire fighters arrived at the scene and had to call for life guards, as well as Urban Search and Rescue divers, to come to the scene.

Divers pulled a man, said to be in his 30s, from the water. Paramedics performed CPR on the man as he was rushed to a local hospital via ambulance, according to Captain Heflin. Sadly, the man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Professionals continued to dive and found another man inside the sinking SUV. The Los Angeles County Fire Department brought in a heavy wrecker and pulled the sinking SUV from the water. The man had already passed away and was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities.
Officers reported the SUV appeared to be the only vehicle involved in this fatal collision. The road was closed in both directions for a while as officers investigated this accident. They hope to determine what exactly caused the SUV to lose control and crash into the water, taking two men’s lives in Long Beach.
