(Los Angeles, CA) One person was killed in a southbound 110 Freeway crash late Sunday night, May 3, after a multi-vehicle collision.

The crash occurred around 11:53 p.m. on the southbound Harbor (110) Freeway near Exposition Boulevard. CHP officers responded to reports of a collision involving multiple vehicles and found damaged cars in the middle lanes. The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation.

Emergency responders transported the victim to a hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, the individual later died from their injuries. Authorities have not released the person’s identity, pending notification of next of kin.

The collision led to the closure of the freeway at Exposition Boulevard for approximately two hours. Traffic was diverted as crews worked to investigate and clear the scene. Officials have not released additional details about possible contributing factors. That information remained unknown as the investigation continued.

Analysis of the Southbound 110 Freeway Crash

When a fatal multi-vehicle freeway crash occurs, investigators review traffic laws carefully to understand contributing factors without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on speed, lane positioning, and following distance.

Because multiple vehicles were involved, officers may examine the Following Too Closely Law. This law requires drivers to maintain a safe distance to allow time to react to traffic changes. On busy freeways, insufficient spacing can lead to chain-reaction collisions. Investigators will assess how closely vehicles were traveling before the crash.

If lane movement is a factor, authorities may also review the Lane Change Safety Law. This law requires drivers to make lane changes safely without interfering with other vehicles. Sudden or unsafe movements can increase the risk of collisions. Investigators will evaluate vehicle positioning and movements across lanes.

When speed or reaction time is considered, police may examine the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds that are safe for roadway and traffic conditions. Late-night driving can reduce visibility and awareness. These factors are often central to understanding a southbound 110 Freeway crash.
