(Lancaster, CA) A woman was killed in an Avenue J hit-and-run Friday night, May 1, after being struck by two vehicles.

Deputies responded around 8:45 p.m. to the intersection of Avenue J and Date Avenue following reports of a pedestrian collision. Investigators said a woman driving a white pickup truck struck the pedestrian, who was outside a marked crosswalk. The circumstances leading up to the initial impact remain under review.

Authorities said about a minute later, a second driver in a silver sedan traveling westbound on Avenue J struck the pedestrian while she was on the roadway. Emergency responders arrived and pronounced the woman dead at the scene. Officials have not released her identity, pending notification of next of kin.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is continuing to investigate both impacts. It was not immediately clear whether either driver remained at the scene or if additional factors contributed to the collision. That information remained unknown as the investigation continued.

Overview of the Avenue J Hit-and-Run

When a fatal pedestrian crash involves multiple impacts, investigators review traffic laws carefully to understand contributing factors without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on pedestrian positioning, driver awareness, and post-collision responsibilities.

Because the pedestrian was reportedly outside a crosswalk, officers may examine the Pedestrian Outside Crosswalk Law. This law requires pedestrians to yield to vehicles when crossing outside marked areas. Investigators will assess where the pedestrian was located and whether this influenced the drivers’ ability to react. Roadway lighting and visibility are also key considerations.

If either driver failed to stop, authorities may also review the Hit-and-Run Law. This law requires drivers involved in injury or fatal crashes to stop, provide identification, and render aid. Leaving the scene can delay emergency response and complicate investigations. Detectives will work to determine each driver’s actions following the impacts.

When reaction time and spacing are factors, police may examine the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds that are safe for roadway and traffic conditions. Nighttime conditions can reduce visibility and increase stopping distance. These factors are often central to understanding an Avenue J hit-and-run.

    What the Family Can Do

If you have lost a loved one in this incident, staying in contact with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department can help you receive updates as the investigation continues. You can request official reports when they become available to better understand the case.

You may also consider speaking with a qualified legal professional experienced in pedestrian and hit-and-run cases. They can help explain your options and guide you through next steps. In addition, seeking support from family, friends, or grief counseling services can provide comfort during this difficult time.
