(Malibu, CA) A pedestrian was killed in a Mulholland Highway collision early Monday morning, May 4, after being struck by a vehicle.

Officers responded around 4:36 a.m. to the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Mulholland Highway following reports of a crash involving a pedestrian. Emergency crews arrived at the scene and located the victim. Los Angeles Fire Department personnel pronounced the individual dead at the scene.

Authorities have not released the victim’s name, age, or gender, pending notification of next of kin. Officials also did not provide details about the vehicle involved or the events leading up to the crash. That information remained unknown as the investigation continued.

The incident prompted a SigAlert, leading to the closure of multiple lanes along Pacific Coast Highway for about an hour. Traffic was impacted as crews worked to secure the area and begin the investigation.

Analysis of the Mulholland Highway Collision

When a fatal pedestrian crash occurs on a major roadway, investigators review traffic laws carefully to understand contributing factors without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on pedestrian positioning, driver awareness, and roadway conditions.

Because pedestrian location is a key factor, officers may examine the Pedestrian Outside Crosswalk Law. This law requires pedestrians to yield to vehicles when crossing outside marked crosswalks. Investigators will assess where the pedestrian was located and whether that influenced the driver’s ability to avoid the collision. Lighting and roadway design are also important considerations.

If speed or visibility is a factor, authorities may also review the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds that are safe for roadway and traffic conditions. Early morning darkness can reduce visibility and increase stopping distance. Investigators will evaluate whether speed played a role.

When driver attentiveness is considered, police may examine the Due Care Law. This law requires drivers to exercise reasonable caution to avoid collisions with others on the roadway. Even on larger roadways, drivers must remain alert for pedestrians. These factors are often central to understanding a Mulholland Highway collision.

    What the Family Can Do

You may also consider speaking with a qualified legal professional experienced in pedestrian collision cases. They can help explain your options and guide you through next steps. In addition, seeking support from family, friends, or grief counseling services can provide comfort during this difficult time.
