(Long Beach, CA) A man was killed in a Pacific Place collision Saturday evening, April 4, after being struck by an SUV while walking.

Long Beach Police Department officers responded around 7:55 p.m. to the area of Pacific Place and West Wardlow Road. Investigators said the driver of a 2025 Subaru Crosstrek traveled southbound in the No. 1 lane. At some point, the vehicle struck a pedestrian outside of a marked crosswalk.

Paramedics arrived shortly after and pronounced the man dead at the scene. Authorities have not released his identity. That information remained unknown as the investigation continued.

Police said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Officials noted that speed, distracted driving, and impairment were not believed to be contributing factors. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives seek additional information.

Analysis On The Pacific Place Collision

When a fatal pedestrian crash occurs outside a crosswalk, investigators review traffic laws to understand contributing factors. These reviews focus on right-of-way, visibility, and driver awareness without assigning fault prematurely.

Because the pedestrian was outside a marked crosswalk, officers may examine the Pedestrian Outside Crosswalk Law. This law requires pedestrians to yield to vehicles when crossing outside designated crosswalks. Investigators will consider where the pedestrian entered the roadway and whether the driver had sufficient time to react. These details are critical in understanding how the collision occurred.

Even when impairment and distraction are not suspected, authorities may review the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to operate at speeds that are safe for roadway and environmental conditions. Evening lighting and roadway design can affect visibility and stopping distance. Investigators may evaluate whether speed influenced the outcome. These factors may help explain what led to the Pacific Place collision.
