(Los Angeles, CA) A 23-year-old man was killed in an eastbound 10 Freeway collision early Sunday morning, March 29.

California Highway Patrol officers responded around 5 a.m. to the eastbound Santa Monica (10) Freeway just east of Crenshaw Boulevard. Investigators said the crash involved three vehicles and left debris scattered across several lanes. The severity of the collision prompted a large emergency response and lane closures.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner identified the victim as Nelson Borja-Ramos, who died from blunt force injuries. Emergency crews pronounced him dead at the scene. Authorities have not released additional details about the other drivers involved.

The crash led to the closure of lanes one through four, leaving only the far-right lane open for traffic. Crews worked to clear the roadway, and all lanes reopened by about 9:30 a.m. Officials have not said what led to the collision, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Overview On The Eastbound 10 Freeway Collision

When a fatal multi-vehicle crash occurs on a freeway, investigators review traffic laws to understand contributing factors. These reviews focus on speed, following distance, and driver awareness without assigning fault prematurely.

Because multiple vehicles were involved and debris spread across lanes, officers may examine the Following Distance Law. This law requires drivers to maintain a safe space between vehicles to avoid collisions. In heavy freeway traffic, limited spacing can quickly lead to chain-reaction crashes. Investigators will consider whether drivers had enough distance to stop safely.

If speed played a role in the crash, authorities may review the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to operate at speeds that are safe for traffic and roadway conditions. Early morning freeway driving can involve changing traffic patterns and reduced visibility. Investigators may evaluate whether speed contributed to the severity of the crash.

When multiple lanes are affected, officers may also consider the Unsafe Lane Change Law. This law requires drivers to ensure movements can be made safely before changing lanes. Sudden or unsafe lane shifts can contribute to multi-vehicle incidents. These factors may help explain what led to the eastbound 10 Freeway collision.
