(Riverside, CA) A 3-month-old baby was killed in an Escondido Freeway accident Sunday evening, March 29, on the 215 Freeway.

California Highway Patrol officers responded around 7:35 p.m. to the northbound Escondido (215) Freeway just south of Eucalyptus Avenue. Investigators said a silver Honda Civic was stopped in the No. 1 lane when a silver Nissan Versa struck it from behind. Moments later, a gray Toyota RAV4 collided with the rear of the Nissan, leaving it pinned between the two vehicles.

Emergency crews arrived and worked to assist multiple victims at the scene. The infant inside the Nissan suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The male driver of the Nissan sustained major injuries and required extrication. A woman and a young girl in the same vehicle suffered minor to moderate injuries.

The Toyota driver sustained moderate injuries, while occupants of the Honda reported pain. An elderly passenger from the Honda was taken to a hospital as a precaution. Authorities stated that impairment was not believed to be a factor in the crash.

A SigAlert shut down all northbound lanes at Eucalyptus Avenue shortly after 8 p.m., causing significant traffic disruption. Crews reopened the lanes around 11:45 p.m. Investigators continue to review what led to the initial stop in traffic.

Overview On The Escondido Freeway Accident

When a multi-vehicle crash involves stopped traffic on a freeway, investigators review traffic laws to understand contributing factors. These reviews focus on following distance, speed, and driver attentiveness without assigning fault prematurely.

Because this crash began with a stopped vehicle being struck from behind, officers may examine the Following Distance Law. This law requires drivers to maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead. If traffic slows or stops suddenly, drivers must be able to react in time. Investigators will consider whether sufficient space was maintained before the initial impact.

If speed played a role in the chain-reaction crash, authorities may review the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds that are safe for traffic conditions. Freeway congestion can change quickly, especially in the evening hours. Investigators may evaluate whether speed limited the ability to stop safely. These factors may help explain what led to the Escondido Freeway accident.
