(Westminster, CA) An elderly man died Tuesday night, February 3, after being struck by a vehicle in a Springdale Street crash.

Westminster police officers responded to the scene around 6:50 p.m. after receiving reports of a pedestrian collision on Springdale Street, just south of Westminster Boulevard. Officers located a man in the roadway who had suffered serious injuries. Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The Orange County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Bobby Callum, 66, who was described as transient. Despite medical care, Callum later died from his injuries at the hospital. Authorities did not release details about the specific injuries or how long he survived after the collision.

Police said the driver involved in the crash remained at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators. Officers stated they did not suspect the driver was impaired at the time of the collision. Officials also did not release information about the vehicle involved, the pedestrian’s exact position in the roadway, or whether a marked crosswalk was nearby.

The cause of the collision remained under investigation as officers continued reviewing evidence and speaking with witnesses. Authorities did not announce any arrests. Additional details about lighting conditions, vehicle speed, or traffic signals were not released and remained unclear as the investigation continued.

Analysis on the Springdale Street Crash

When a pedestrian is killed on a city street, investigators review traffic safety laws to understand what factors may have contributed, without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on pedestrian visibility, driver attentiveness, and roadway conditions during evening hours.

Because the incident occurred on a surface street, investigators may examine the Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law. This law requires drivers to exercise due care to avoid colliding with pedestrians, including slowing or taking other precautions when necessary. Investigators may review whether the driver had sufficient time and visibility to react.

If the pedestrian was outside a marked crosswalk, authorities could also consider the Pedestrian Crossing Law. This law requires pedestrians crossing outside crosswalks to yield to vehicles that pose an immediate hazard. Investigators may assess pedestrian positioning as part of the overall review.

Because the collision happened in the evening, investigators may further look at the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to operate at speeds reasonable for traffic, lighting, and roadway conditions. Reduced visibility after dark can shorten reaction time, which investigators may evaluate as part of the Springdale Street crash review.

You may also consider speaking with a qualified legal professional to better understand available options and resources. Emotional support from family members, friends, or community support services can also help during an especially difficult and overwhelming time.
