(San Diego, CA) Three people were injured in an Ocean View Boulevard collision Thursday evening, January 1, after a Volkswagen Passat crossed into oncoming traffic in the Mountain View neighborhood.

San Diego police responded around 7:37 p.m. to the 3800 block of Ocean View Boulevard. According to investigators, the westbound Passat drifted into the eastbound lanes and struck a Kia Soul head-on. The 33-year-old driver of the Passat suffered life-threatening internal injuries. The 61-year-old woman driving the Kia sustained a leg injury, and her 63-year-old passenger suffered a broken femur.

Police say alcohol was a factor in the crash. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact SDPD or Crime Stoppers.

Overview on the Ocean View Boulevard Collision

When a driver crosses into oncoming traffic, investigators often begin with the Lane Usage and Safe Movement Law. This law requires motorists to remain within a single lane and change lanes only when safe. Reviewing roadway markings, vehicle paths, and driver statements helps determine why the Passat entered opposing lanes during the Ocean View Boulevard collision.

Because police confirmed alcohol was involved, they will also apply the Driving Under the Influence Law. Impairment reduces a driver’s ability to maintain proper lane position and react to hazards. Toxicology results and witness accounts help clarify the extent to which DUI contributed to the head-on crash.

Additionally, head-on collisions frequently involve evaluations under the Basic Speed Law. Even if a driver is not exceeding the posted limit, traveling too fast for nighttime or neighborhood conditions can reduce control and increase crash severity. This review helps investigators determine whether unsafe speed played any role.

    Guidance for the Families

If someone you know was injured, you may request the SDPD collision report once it becomes available. This document can provide important clarity regarding the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Those facing sudden medical emergencies or long-term injuries may also find it helpful to consult a personal injury attorney familiar with DUI-related collisions. An attorney can help navigate medical expenses, recovery needs, and insurance claims.

Finally, local support services in San Diego, including counseling centers and victim-assistance programs, can offer emotional support as families cope with the aftermath of this serious crash.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
