(San Diego, CA) A 40-year-old man was injured late Friday night, December 13, in a Qualcomm Way collision after being struck while walking through an intersection.

The crash happened around 11:46 p.m. at Qualcomm Way and Camino De La Reina. Police say the man walked in the west crosswalk against a red light. At that moment, a 2007 Honda Accord traveling westbound on Camino De La Rein entered the intersection and hit him.

The pedestrian suffered an open fracture to his left leg, along with facial lacerations and abrasions. The 41-year-old driver remained at the scene, and officers said alcohol was not a factor. The investigation is ongoing.

Overview on the Qualcomm Way Collision

When a pedestrian crosses against a traffic signal, investigators often review the Pedestrian Signal Compliance Law. This statute requires pedestrians to obey crossing signals and not enter a roadway when facing a steady red hand. Even so, drivers must still use reasonable care, and officers will evaluate visibility and intersection lighting to understand how the crash occurred.

Because the driver entered the intersection with a green light, analysts may also reference the Right-of-Way for Vehicles Law. While this law primarily addresses yielding, it helps clarify how right-of-way rules apply when a pedestrian moves into the roadway against the signal. Its principles guide reconstruction efforts for the Qualcomm Way collision.

Investigators may additionally examine the Basic Speed Law, which requires drivers to travel at speeds reasonable for nighttime visibility and traffic conditions. Even though impairment was ruled out, officers will assess whether the vehicle’s speed was appropriate for the intersection at the time of impact.

    Support for the Family

If your loved one was the injured pedestrian, you should request the official SDPD collision report once it becomes available. It can help clarify how the incident unfolded and support necessary insurance or medical steps.

You may also want to consult a personal injury attorney who can explain options for covering treatment, rehabilitation, and possible long-term care needs.

Lean on family, friends, and local support resources as healing begins. Sudden trauma can be overwhelming, and compassionate assistance can make the road ahead more manageable.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
