(Long Beach, CA) An East Anaheim Street crash involving a pick-up truck resulted in the death of Amber Mitchel, 37, while she crossed the street late Wednesday night, November 12.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, the collision occurred around 10:25 p.m. at the intersection of East Anaheim Street and Alamitos Avenue. Officers responding to the scene found Mitchell lying in the roadway. When paramedics with the Long Beach Fire Department arrived, they pronounced her dead at the scene.

Investigators said Mitchell, who was homeless, was crossing outside of a marked crosswalk when she was hit by a 1997 Chevrolet Sierra traveling westbound. The driver of the pickup remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police said the crash did not appear to involve excessive speed, distraction, or impairment.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information is asked to contact the LBPD Collision Investigation Detail at 562-570-7110.

Overview on the East Anaheim Street Crash

When a pedestrian is struck outside of a crosswalk, investigators often refer to the Pedestrian Crossing Law. This statute requires pedestrians crossing mid-block to yield to vehicles. This law also requires drivers to exercise due care to avoid hitting anyone in the roadway. Police will review both elements to determine cause and responsibility.

If visibility or nighttime conditions were a factor, the Basic Speed Law may also apply. This law mandates that motorists drive at speeds safe for the conditions, including lighting, weather, and traffic flow.

Finally, the Driver’s Duty of Care Law reminds motorists to be vigilant for pedestrians in or near intersections and to reduce speed when necessary. These statutes will help Long Beach police assess the circumstances of the East Anaheim Street crash.

    Support for Mitchell’s Family

If you are related to Amber Mitchell, you should stay in contact with the Long Beach Police Department for updates on the case and to request the official collision report once it becomes available. This report can provide important clarity about what led to the crash that took Amber Mitchell’s life.
