(Burbank, CA) A pedestrian lost his life in a Golden State Freeway collision on Saturday evening, shocking drivers and causing major delays in the area.

On Saturday, September 27, at 7:09 p.m., the California Highway Patrol received reports of a man struck on the southbound Golden State Freeway at Verdugo Avenue. Witnesses said the pedestrian crossed multiple lanes when a vehicle hit him. As a result, the crash left him down in the No. 1 lane. Several drivers stopped to help, and one vehicle reportedly shielded him from traffic.

When officers arrived, they blocked off lanes to protect first responders. The CHP issued a SigAlert at 7:40 p.m., closing the HOV lane along with lanes 1 and 2. Emergency crews reopened all lanes by 9:56 p.m.

Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name or age. Investigators aim to determine if the driver who struck him remained at the scene. This Golden State Freeway collision left many drivers shaken and caused heavy traffic delays through Burbank.

Legal Perspective on the Golden State Freeway Collision

A lawyer speaks to a client regarding an accident.

In a case like the Golden State Freeway collision, California law looks at several key issues. The first is whether the driver followed traffic duties. Vehicle Code 20001 states that any driver involved in a crash causing injury or death must stop immediately. If the driver failed to remain at the scene, it could bring serious criminal charges and liability.

The next consideration involves speed. If investigators find that the driver traveled too fast for conditions, Vehicle Code 22350 could apply. This law requires drivers to maintain a safe speed for traffic, weather, and roadway conditions. Even if the driver obeyed the posted limit, going too fast for a crowded freeway can still create responsibility.

Investigators may also examine pedestrian laws. Vehicle Code 21954 explains that pedestrians outside of crosswalks must yield to vehicles. However, it also states drivers must always exercise due care to avoid hitting someone, even when the pedestrian is in an unsafe location. This balance means that both pedestrian actions and driver behavior are reviewed.

    Guidance for the Family

For the victim’s family, this situation is heartbreaking and confusing. They may have rights to bring a wrongful death claim. Such a claim could cover funeral costs, loss of income, and emotional suffering. If the driver fled or acted negligently, the family can pursue civil damages alongside any criminal case.

Families often do not realize that insurance may still provide compensation, even if the pedestrian was crossing the freeway. It is important to consult an attorney quickly. Time limits apply in California, and early action helps preserve evidence such as witness statements, CHP reports, and roadway conditions.

In moments like this, the legal process can feel overwhelming. An experienced lawyer can guide the family step by step, helping them seek answers, accountability, and justice after this Golden State Freeway collision.

We at Accident News Now extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim. We know this is a difficult time as you mourn the tragic and sudden loss of a loved one.
