(Jurupa Valley, CA) An early Saturday morning 15 Freeway multi-vehicle crash resulted in the death of Cynthia Weymans, 70, of Yorba Linda in Jurupa Valley.

On Saturday, August 30, at 3:40 a.m., the 15 Freeway multi-vehicle crash occurred. According to the California Highway Patrol, it happened on the northbound lanes of Interstate 15, just north of Limonite Avenue.

When authorities investigated, they learned a Chevrolet Cruze rear-ended a Mercedes SUV, driven by Cynthia Weymans. The Cruze pushed the Mercedes into the center median. Meanwhile, a Jeep Wrangler drove in the opposite lane. All of a sudden, the Jeep struck the driver’s side of the Mercedes, fatally injuring  Weymans. The Chevrolet Cruze continued driving, veering across the freeway toward the right shoulder. A Chevrolet Silverado braked hard to avoid striking it. Despite trying to avoid a crash, a Nissan Altima behind the Silverado failed to stop in time and crashed into the rear of the truck.

By the time paramedics arrived, they pronounced Weymans dead. authorities determined the crash involved three SUVs and two sedans. CHP officers closed all northbound lanes and the Limonite Avenue on-ramp under a Sigalert while clearing debris and investigating. Investigators later located the Cruze driver, who allegedly fled the scene. Officers arrested the driver on suspicion of DUI, hit-and-run, and murder. CHP also arrested the Jeep Wrangler driver on suspicion of DUI.

Legal Opinion on the 15 Freeway Multi-Vehicle Crash

A lawyer speaks to a client regarding an accident.

The 15 Freeway multi-vehicle crash that killed Cynthia Weymans raises serious legal concerns. Both drivers now face criminal charges, and their actions likely create civil liability as well. California Vehicle Code 23152 makes it illegal to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The CHP reported that both the Chevrolet Cruze driver and Jeep Wrangler driver drove while intoxicated. DUI that result in a fatal crash creates grounds for enhanced criminal charges and strong civil claims. California Vehicle Code 20001 also applies because the Cruze driver allegedly fled the scene. Leaving an accident involving death or injury is a felony. Fleeing shows disregard for human life and increases liability in civil cases.

Prosecutors may also apply California Penal Code 187 to the 15 Freeway multi-vehicle crash. Courts allow second-degree murder charges in DUI cases when a driver understands the risks, but drives drunk anyway. Prior DUI convictions or court advisements often establish this knowledge. California Vehicle Code 22350, the Basic Speed Law, may also come into play. Drivers must travel at speeds safe for conditions, and any unsafe driving that contributed to the crash increases liability.

    What the Family Can Do

The family of Cynthia Weymans has the right to bring a wrongful death claim under California Code of Civil Procedure 377.60. This law allows them to seek compensation for funeral costs, loss of companionship, and the financial support Cynthia provided. An attorney can work closely with CHP investigators to obtain the report on the 15 Freeway multi-vehicle crash. Attorneys can also obtain DUI test results and witness statements. Video from traffic or surveillance cameras may also strengthen the case.

While no legal action can bring Cynthia Weymans back, pursuing a wrongful death case can hold the responsible drivers accountable. It can also provide her family with financial support and a measure of justice during this devastating time. Taking swift legal steps ensures the family’s rights remain protected.
