(Huntington Beach, CA) A 65-year-old Huntington Beach woman died after a Toyota 4Runner struck her while she crossed Edinger Avenue near Springdale Street.
On October 31, shortly before 10 p.m., officers responded to Edinger Avenue and Springdale Street following a collision report. The woman was crossing southbound across Edinger, east of Springdale, according to the Huntington Beach Police Department. A silver Toyota 4Runner traveling east on Edinger struck her.
Arriving officers found the woman lying in the roadway, and paramedics responded to provide care. She was taken to a local hospital, where she died from her injuries. Police identified her as a Huntington Beach resident.
The Toyota’s driver, a 25-year-old man from Midway City, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. He was not injured, according to the department’s account. Officers said impairment did not appear to be a factor for the driver; whether it played a role for the pedestrian was still undetermined.
The department’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is investigating the collision. Investigators are seeking witnesses who saw either the impact or the events leading up to it. Anyone with information can contact HBPD Traffic Investigator Tam Do at 714-536-5666.
Understanding the Edinger Avenue Collision
The woman and the SUV approached the point of impact from different directions: she was walking south, while the Toyota traveled east. Witnesses who saw those movements before contact could help explain when their paths converged.
California Vehicle Code 21950 sets out the general responsibility to use ordinary care to avoid injuring others. Applied to this collision, that means examining how the driver approached the crossing and how the pedestrian entered his path. The department’s request for information about events before impact is useful here because an eyewitness may have seen more than the collision itself.
For surviving relatives, California Code of Civil Procedure 377.60 provides a wrongful-death claim when another person’s wrongful act or neglect causes a death. The statute identifies which relatives can bring that claim, either directly or through a personal representative. A family’s eligibility and the conduct that caused the death are separate questions.
