(Studio City, CA) A man in his late forties was killed early Tuesday, December 23, in a Ventura Boulevard hit-and-run after being struck by two vehicles while crossing the roadway.

Authorities received reports of the crash at around 5:44 a.m. in the 12900 block of Ventura Boulevard near Coldwater Canyon Avenue. LAPD investigators say the first vehicle, described as a black Toyota RAV4 traveled eastbound on Ventura. At some point, they hit the pedestrian and fled southbound on Van Noord Avenue. A second eastbound vehicle then struck the man as he lay in the roadway. First responders pronounced him dead at the scene. Both drivers left without stopping, and the investigation remains active.

Overview on the Ventura Boulevard Hit-and-Run

In collisions where drivers flee the scene, investigators turn immediately to the Hit-and-Run Statute. This statute requires any driver involved in a crash causing injury or death to stop, identify themselves, and provide assistance. Because both motorists left after striking the victim, this law will be at the center of the Ventura Boulevard hit-and-run investigation.

Since the victim was crossing the street when struck, officers may also reference the Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law. While pedestrians must not step suddenly into traffic, drivers are still obligated to exercise due care. Investigators will assess visibility, lighting, and traffic flow along Ventura Boulevard to understand whether the pedestrian could be clearly seen.

Additionally, the Basic Speed Law may be applied. This law requires motorists to travel at speeds reasonable for conditions, especially during pre-dawn hours when streets are dim and pedestrian visibility is reduced. Evaluating safe speed helps clarify whether the drivers’ actions contributed to the severity of the Ventura Boulevard hit-and-run.
