(Panorama City, CA) A 40-year-old woman was killed in a Van Nuys Boulevard collision early Friday, December 26, after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver in a shopping center parking lot.
The crash happened around 4:55 a.m. as an unidentified vehicle entered The Plant Shopping Center from Van Nuys Boulevard. The driver struck the pedestrian, later identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner as Marlene Saravia Bonilla. Police say the driver did not stop and continued eastbound through the lot.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics pronounced Saravia-Bonilla dead at the scene. LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division is seeking information from the public as the investigation continues.
Overview on the Van Nuys Boulevard Collision
Because the driver left the scene after striking the victim, investigators will focus heavily on the Hit-and-Run Statute. This statute requires drivers involved in injury or fatal collisions to stop, identify themselves, and render assistance. Fleeing immediately places the incident into felony hit-and-run territory and becomes the central issue in the Van Nuys Boulevard collision.
Since the crash occurred in a parking lot connected to a major roadway, analysts may also reference the Pedestrian Right-of-Way. Although pedestrians must exercise caution, drivers entering shopping centers must operate slowly and watch for people on foot. Investigators will evaluate lighting, visibility, and the angle of entry from Van Nuys Boulevard to understand how the impact happened.
Additionally, officers may review the Basic Speed Law. Even in private lots, drivers must travel at speeds that are reasonable for conditions, especially pre-dawn when visibility is low. This statute helps investigators determine whether unsafe speed contributed to the severity of the Van Nuys Boulevard collision.
