(Long Beach, CA) A pedestrian lost his life Friday afternoon in a Paramount Boulevard accident after being struck by a semi-truck in the 6700 block, authorities confirmed.

On Friday, September 19, at around 4:00 p.m., the Paramount Boulevard Accident occurred when a man was walking northbound in the middle of the roadway, outside a marked crosswalk. According to the Long Beach Police Department, a southbound 2019 International big rig driven by a 51-year-old local resident struck him.

Emergency crews arrived within minutes, but sadly, paramedics pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. Police reported that the truck driver stayed and cooperated with the investigation. Authorities stated that neither speeding nor distracted or impaired driving appeared to play a role in the Paramount Boulevard accident. The case remains under review by the Long Beach Police Department.

Legal Perspective on the Paramount Boulevard Accident

Pedestrian fatalities are always devastating. California law provides clear guidance on the rights and responsibilities of both drivers and pedestrians. One relevant law is California Vehicle Code 21954, which addresses pedestrians crossing outside crosswalks. This means the truck driver had a duty to remain alert, even though the victim was outside a crosswalk.

Another key statute is California Vehicle Code 22350, known as the Basic Speed Law. Even when drivers travel below the posted speed limit, they must drive at speeds safe for traffic conditions. Investigators will review whether the truck driver could have adjusted speed to avoid the crash.  Because the collision resulted in death, the victim’s family has the right to file a wrongful death claim under California Code of Civil Procedure 377.60. Such claims allow recovery for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and emotional damages caused by the sudden loss.

What the Family Can Do

The family of the pedestrian should consider consulting a wrongful death attorney as soon as possible. An attorney can secure the police report on the Paramount Boulevard accident. They can also interview witnesses and examine whether roadway design, visibility, or driver conduct contributed to the accident. Filing a wrongful death lawsuit could provide financial relief for funeral costs and lost income while ensuring accountability. Even though the driver remained on scene and cooperated, the law still protects the rights of grieving families after a tragic Paramount Boulevard accident.
