(Phoenix, AZ) A 35th Avenue crash caused the death of Mark Joseph Knapp, 45, after being struck by multiple vehicles Saturday night, November 8.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, the collision occurred around 8:00 p.m. near the intersection of 35th Avenue and Dunlap Avenue. Responding officers found Knapp seriously injured in the roadway. Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Detectives believe Knapp crossed the street when he fell, several vehicles hitting him while on the ground. None of the drivers involved stayed at the scene, police said.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS or 480-TESTIGO for Spanish speakers. A reward of up to $2,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest.

Overview on the 35th Avenue Crash

In fatal hit-and-run cases like this, Arizona’s Duty to Remain at the Scene Law becomes the key statute. It requires any driver involved in a collision that causes injury or death to stop, provide identification, and render aid. Fleeing from the scene of a deadly crash is a felony under state law.

Because the victim was a pedestrian, the Pedestrian Safety Law also applies. It directs drivers to exercise due care to avoid colliding with anyone on foot, even if that person is in an unexpected position on the roadway. The drivers’ collective failure to stop and assist will be central to this investigation.

Additionally, the Reckless Driving Law may come into play if investigators determine that any of the vehicles were speeding or operating carelessly when the man was struck. These statutes will help Phoenix police and prosecutors build their case in the 35th Avenue crash.
