(Bakersfield, CA) A South Union Avenue crash killed Juan Sigfredo Hernandez Melara, 42, in Bakersfield.
On Saturday, August 2, at around 9:29 p.m., the South Union Avenue crash occurred. According to the California Highway Patrol, it happened on South Union Avenue, just north of Taft Highway.
When CHP officers investigated, they learned a 34-year-old woman drove a 2010 Honda Civic northbound on South Union Avenue. At the same time, Juan Sigfredo Hernandez Melara crossed the northbound lanes of the street outside the marked crosswalk. Unable to avoid Melara, the Honda driver struck him.
When paramedics arrived at the South Union Avenue crash site, they found Melara with severe injuries. Despite transporting him to Kern Medical, they pronounced him dead. The Honda driver stopped near the scene, cooperating with the investigation. First responders also transported her to Kern Medical with minor injuries.
