(Fullerton, CA) A man was struck and killed Sunday evening, November 23, in a Gilbert Street crash while pushing a wheelchair through a crosswalk.

According to the Fullerton Police Department, the collision occurred around 6:40 p.m. near South Gilbert Street and West Orangethorpe Avenue. Investigators said the man was pushing a wheelchair north in a marked crosswalk on the west side of the street. At that moment, a white Toyota Prius turned west onto Orangethorpe and struck him.

Fire Department personnel provided medical aid and transported the victim to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The driver of the Prius remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Authorities said it’s unclear whether the man crossed against a “Don’t Walk” signal. Authorities don’t believe drugs and alcohol to be factors in the crash.

Police urge anyone with information about the incident to contact Fullerton Police Traffic Investigator J. Munoz at 714-738-6812. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS or occrimestoppers.ca.

Overview on the Gilbert Street Crash

In pedestrian collisions, investigators analyze several key traffic laws to determine contributing factors. The Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians crossing within marked crosswalks. This also requires pedestrians not to suddenly leave a curb or place of safety.

The Pedestrian Signal Law governs crossing signals, stating pedestrians must obey “Walk” and “Don’t Walk” indicators. If the signal status is unclear, investigators rely on witness statements and nearby surveillance footage to assess compliance.

Finally, the Duty to Exercise Due Care Law requires motorists to exercise caution and take every reasonable step to avoid hitting pedestrians. These provisions will help determine what led to the Gilbert Street crash and whether it was preventable.

Support for the Family

The victim’s family is encouraged to remain in contact with the Fullerton Police Department for updates and to request a copy of the official collision report once available. This report will contain essential findings that may assist with insurance or legal matters.

It may also be beneficial to consult a wrongful-death attorney experienced in pedestrian accidents to understand available options for financial recovery related to funeral expenses, emotional damages, or loss of support.
