(Poway, CA) David Ortiz, 69, of Warner Springs, died in an October 8, head-on crash involving two pickups north of Poway Road.

At approximately 6:08 a.m., the pickups collided on State Route 67 just north of Poway Road. Ortiz was driving one of the trucks, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office and Sheriff’s Office. The available report does not establish how the vehicles entered each other’s path.

Following the collision, emergency personnel responded and found Ortiz with fatal injuries. The medical examiner recorded his death at the scene at 6:23 a.m. They confirmed his cause of death was due to multiple blunt force injuries.

The other driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies and Poway Fire Department personnel responded to the crash. The Sheriff’s Office is investigating what led to the head-on impact.

Understanding the State Route 67 Collision

The unanswered question is how the two pickups came to meet head-on. That requires establishing their paths before impact, rather than treating the type of collision as proof that a particular driver crossed into opposing traffic.

California Vehicle Code 21650 generally requires vehicles to travel on the right half of the roadway, with exceptions for lawful maneuvers and certain road conditions. If evidence establishes that one of the pickups entered the opposing side, the next question would be why it did so and whether an exception applied. The initial report does not identify which vehicle, if either, crossed the roadway’s dividing line.

A head-on impact alone cannot distinguish an unsafe maneuver from a vehicle displaced by another event. Physical evidence showing the point of impact, together with any witness accounts, would help establish the sequence. Those are questions for the collision investigation, not facts supplied by the medical examiner’s findings.

For surviving relatives, California Code of Civil Procedure 377.60 permits specified family members, or a personal representative acting on their behalf, to pursue a wrongful-death claim when another person’s wrongful act or neglect causes a death. The statute determines who can bring that claim; it does not establish responsibility for this crash. That would require connecting proven conduct to Ortiz’s death.

What the Family Can Do

You can ask the Sheriff’s Office when the report for the State Route 67 collision will be available and whether it includes a diagram of the pickups’ paths. Ask how to provide any photographs or witness information your family receives so it reaches the assigned investigator. The medical examiner’s case number, 2026-02791, can help you request the separate records documenting David’s death.
