(Chandler, AZ) A 16-year-old student died in an Arizona Avenue crash after being struck by a vehicle while crossing near his high school earlier this month.

The collision occurred just after noon on April 2 near Arizona Avenue and Detroit Street, close to Chandler High School. Authorities said the teen crossed the roadway outside of a marked crosswalk when he was hit by a vehicle. Witnesses at the scene provided initial details to responding officers.

Chandler Police and Fire units arrived and transported the teen to a hospital with serious injuries. Despite several days of medical care, he died on April 6. His family later identified him as Jayben “Jee” Camacho, a sophomore at the school.

Police said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Officials have not released additional details about the circumstances of the crash. That information remained unknown as the investigation continued.

Perspective on the Arizona Avenue Crash

When a fatal pedestrian collision occurs near a school, investigators review traffic laws carefully to understand contributing factors without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on pedestrian crossing behavior, driver awareness, and roadway safety.

Because the teen was crossing outside a marked crosswalk, officers may examine the Pedestrian Roadway Law. This law requires pedestrians to yield the right-of-way to vehicles when crossing outside designated areas. Investigators will assess where the teen entered the roadway and whether drivers had sufficient time to react. Traffic flow and visibility are also important considerations.

If driver attentiveness is a factor, authorities may also review the Due Care Law. This law requires drivers to exercise reasonable care to avoid collisions. Even when a pedestrian is outside a crosswalk, drivers must remain alert and take steps to avoid a crash when possible. Investigators will evaluate whether the driver responded appropriately. These factors are often central to understanding an Arizona Avenue crash.
