(Phoenix, AZ) A 41-year-old motorcyclist was killed Tuesday morning, December 9, in a Loop 202 crash involving seven vehicles near the 32nd Street on-ramp.

Troopers identified the rider as Christopher Cartheuser of Tempe. The crash happened around 8:45 a.m. when an SUV slowed for heavy traffic on westbound Loop 202. DPS says Cartheuser rear-ended the SUV, fell from his motorcycle, and was struck by a utility van. He became pinned beneath the van before emergency crews were able to pull him out.

Cartheuser was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries. A woman from another vehicle was also transported for treatment, though her condition has not been released. The freeway was closed at 40th Street for several hours while officials investigated.

Overview on the Loop 202 Crash

When a driver fails to stop in time for slowing traffic, investigators often review the Following Too Closely Law. This statute requires motorists to maintain a safe and prudent distance from the vehicle ahead. In heavy traffic, even a brief lapse in spacing can lead to a rear-end collision, which appears central to how this crash began.

Because the collision involved a motorcyclist falling into another lane, analysts may reference the Motorcycle Safety Law. This law outlines how motorcycles must be safely operated within traffic flow. While Cartheuser was struck after falling, the statute helps guide investigators as they examine visibility, lane changes, and driver responses during multi-vehicle chain reactions.

In multi-car freeway crashes, troopers also consider the Basic Speed Law. This rule requires drivers to adjust speed for traffic and roadway conditions. Even if drivers are traveling below the posted limit, congested freeway conditions demand extra caution. Reviewing this law helps determine whether speed contributed to the severity of the Loop 202 crash.
