(Bellflower, CA) A 24-year-old motorcyclist was killed Wednesday morning, December 10, in an eastbound Artesia Freeway crash involving an SUV just west of the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway.

Authorities received reports of the collision around 7:30 a.m. Responding officers found one person unresponsive in the roadway. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner later identified the victim as Rigoberto Ruiz Raygoza.

Authorities shut down the carpool and far-left lanes during the investigation. This created heavy traffic backups that stretched to the Long Beach (710) Freeway and prompted a SigAlert.

CHP has not yet released details about how the crash occurred. The investigation remains active.

Overview on the Eastbound Artesia Freeway Crash

When a motorcycle and SUV collide during heavy freeway traffic, investigators typically assess the Lane Usage and Safe Movement Law. This statute requires drivers to stay within their lane until a movement can be made safely. Any sudden drift or unsafe lane change can be especially dangerous for motorcyclists traveling beside larger vehicles.

Officers also evaluate the Basic Speed Law. This rule requires motorists to travel at speeds reasonable for traffic flow and roadway conditions. Morning congestion on the 91 Freeway can significantly reduce reaction time, so investigators consider whether speed contributed to the severity of the eastbound Artesia Freeway crash.

If driver distraction is a possibility, investigators may reference the Handheld Device Law. Although CHP has not stated that device use played a role, checking for potential distraction helps determine whether inattention contributed to the collision.
