(San Diego, CA) An 89-year-old woman was seriously injured Tuesday morning, November 17, in an Imperial Avenue accident when her car collided with an SUV in the Jamacha area, authorities said.
According to the San Diego Police Department, the crash occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. A woman, driving a Volkswagen Jetta, attempted to make a left turn from westbound Imperial Avenue onto Viewcrest Drive. While making a turn, her vehicle was struck by an oncoming Ford Excursion traveling eastbound on Imperial.
Paramedics arrived and transported the woman to a hospital, where she was treated for multiple serious injuries, including brain bleeds, a cervical spinal fracture, and a broken orbital bone, SDPD Officer Sarah Foster said. No other injuries were reported in the crash.
The intersection was partially closed for a short time as police documented the scene and cleared debris. The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.
Overview on the Imperial Avenue Accident
When crashes occur during left turns, investigators typically review the Left Turn or U-Turn Law. This law requires drivers turning left to yield to oncoming traffic until the turn can be made safely. Failing to wait for a clear path often results in serious right-of-way collisions.
The Basic Speed Law may also come into play if investigators determine that either driver was traveling too fast for current road or visibility conditions. Even within posted limits, higher speeds reduce reaction time and increase impact severity.
Additionally, the Duty to Exercise Due Care Law reminds all drivers to maintain awareness and act cautiously to prevent harm to others. These laws will help the San Diego Police Department determine contributing factors in the Imperial Avenue accident.
