(Jurupa Valley, CA) A Market Street crash killed Daniel Melgar, 23, of Ontario, Wednesday evening, October 15, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies dispatched to the area of Market Street and 24th Street around 7:20 p.m. When they arrived, they found Melgar deceased at the scene. The Riverside County Coroner’s Office later identified hi and notified family members.

Authorities said the collision involved another vehicle whose driver remained on scene and cooperated with investigators. Deputies noted that alcohol and/or drugs appeared to be a factor, though it was unclear which party may have been under the influence. No arrests were immediately made.

Market Street was temporarily closed between Hall Avenue and Rivera Street while officials conducted their investigation and cleared the scene.

Melgar’s family set up a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses.

Perspective on the Market Street Crash

This collision marks another tragic reminder of how quickly lives can be lost when impairment or inattention enter the roadway. Investigators are reviewing evidence to determine whether substance use, speed, or visibility contributed to the fatal collision.

Under California Vehicle Code 23152, it is illegal to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If impairment leads to death, prosecutors may consider charges under California Penal Code 191.5. This law covers gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. These laws are designed to hold impaired drivers accountable, raise felony charges, and deter dangerous behavior on California roads.

If unsafe speed or loss of control contributed to this incident, the Basic Speed Law may also apply. It requires drivers to maintain speeds safe for conditions, particularly at intersections and during nighttime hours when motorcycles are harder to see.

Authorities will continue examining the scene and witness accounts to determine the sequence of events that caused the Market Street crash and the death of Daniel Melgar.
