(Newhall, CA) A northbound 5 Freeway crash resulted in the death of Bulmaro Alvarez Chavez, 60, late Saturday night, November 8, in the Newhall area of Santa Clarita.
According to Officer Sergio Garcia of the California Highway Patrol, the crash was reported around 11:10 p.m. on the northbound Golden State Freeway just north of Templin Highway. One of the vehicles went over an embankment and overturned onto its roof.
Paramedics responded to the scene but pronounced Chavez dead from multiple blunt-force injuries. Authorities issued a SigAlert at 11:36 p.m., closing several northbound lanes for several hours. All lanes reopened by 4:45 a.m. Sunday, the CHP said.
Alvarez’s family set up a GoFundMe page to help raise funeral expenses.
Overview on the Northbound 5 Freeway Crash
When a vehicle overturns or leaves the roadway, investigators often begin with the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds that are reasonable and safe for conditions such as traffic, weather, and road curves. Exceeding a safe speed can cause a driver to lose control and veer off the freeway.
If lane changes or merging contributed to the crash, the Unsafe Lane Change Law may also apply. It prohibits turning or moving from a lane until the maneuver can be done safely, a key factor in freeway collisions involving multiple vehicles.
Additionally, the Seat Belt Law may be reviewed during the investigation to determine whether proper restraints were used. These statutes will help CHP investigators establish what led to the northbound 5 Freeway crash and how it turned fatal.
