(San Diego, CA) A passenger suffered serious injuries Saturday night, January 24, after a speeding driver caused a violent 15th Street accident, involving other vehicles.

The San Diego Police Department said the crash occurred around 8:15 p.m. at the intersection of 15th Street and F Street. Officers responding to the scene found multiple damaged vehicles and a heavily impacted intersection following the collision.

Police said a westbound Kia Optima driven by a 20-year-old man traveled at a high rate of speed on F Street. At some point, it broadsided a Subaru Forester heading south on 15th Street and crossing the intersection. After the initial impact, the Kia continued forward and struck a parked Ford F-150 pickup truck, which was then pushed into a parked Toyota Corolla.

A passenger inside the Subaru suffered serious injuries, including a brain bleed and a ruptured diaphragm, according to authorities. Paramedics provided emergency medical care and transported the injured passenger to a hospital for treatment. Police did not release the passenger’s name or current condition.

The 20-year-old driver of the Kia was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence. Authorities did not release the driver’s name. Police said no other injuries were reported, and the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

Analysis on the 15th Street Accident

When a serious injury crash occurs at a city intersection, investigators review traffic safety laws to understand what factors may have contributed, without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on speed, impairment, and right-of-way decisions.

Because police reported the Kia was speeding, investigators will examine the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds reasonable for traffic, visibility, and roadway conditions. Excessive speed through urban intersections sharply reduces reaction time and increases crash severity.

Authorities will also review the Driving Under the Influence Law. This law prohibits operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Impairment can affect judgment, coordination, and perception, which are critical for safely navigating intersections with cross traffic.

Since the Subaru was traveling lawfully through the intersection, investigators may consider the Unsafe Intersection Entry Law. This law requires drivers to yield when entering or crossing an intersection where another vehicle constitutes an immediate hazard. Failure to yield at speed often results in broadside collisions, which are among the most dangerous types of crashes. Together, these laws help investigators evaluate what may have led to the 15th Street accident as evidence continues to be reviewed.
