(Phoenix, AZ) A bicyclist was critically injured Tuesday morning, November 11, in an 11th Avenue accident after being struck by a vehicle along Carefree Highway, authorities said.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, the crash occurred just after 9:00 a.m. near the intersection of 11th Avenue and Carefree Highway. Responding officers found an off-duty firefighter already providing medical care to the injured cyclist. Paramedics transported the man to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police said the woman driving the car remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Detectives do not believe impairment or intoxication played a role in the crash. Eastbound lanes of Carefree Highway were temporarily reduced to one lane while police investigated the scene.

The case remains under active investigation, and no charges have been announced.

Overview on the 11th Avenue Accident

When a vehicle collides with a bicyclist, investigators often begin with the Bicycle Safety Statute. It requires motorists to maintain a minimum of three feet of distance when overtaking or passing a cyclist. Investigators will assess whether the driver gave the bicyclist adequate space or reacted appropriately before impact.

If visibility or speed played a role, the Reasonable and Prudent Speed Law may also apply. This statute requires drivers to operate at a speed that is safe for current traffic and roadway conditions. Even within posted limits, traveling too fast can limit a driver’s ability to avoid a cyclist ahead.

Additionally, Arizona’s Duty to Exercise Due Care Law directs drivers to remain alert and take precautions to avoid colliding with pedestrians or cyclists, especially in areas where shoulder use or narrow lanes make biking more hazardous. These statutes will guide Phoenix police as they determine how the 11th Avenue accident occurred.
